Freezing in winter, unusable in summer — fixed
A conservatory with a polycarbonate or glass roof is a greenhouse in July and a cold store in January, which is why most of them end up used for about eight weeks a year. Insulating the roof is what turns it back into a room.
The roof is where nearly all of the heat goes out and nearly all of the solar gain comes in, so that is where we work. An insulated ceiling is built inside the existing roof structure: a lightweight frame between the glazing bars, multifoil and rigid insulation layered into it, then plasterboarded and skimmed so it finishes like any other ceiling. The existing roof stays where it is, so there is no planning issue and no structural work.
We can leave roof vents or a glazed strip in place if you want daylight retained, insulate the dwarf walls at the same time where they are single-skin, and deal with the perimeter junction that otherwise leaves a cold, mould-prone stripe around the edge of the new ceiling. Fixed price, our own fitters, usually two to three days.
